The primary purpose of a common mode choke is to attenuate common mode noise—unwanted high-frequency currents that flow in the same direction on multiple conductors, such as power lines or differential signal pairs. This noise is often generated by switching power supplies, high-speed digital circuits, or external electromagnetic sources, and it can easily radiate or conduct into other parts of the system.

 

A common mode choke works by presenting high impedance to common mode currents while allowing normal differential signals or power currents to pass with minimal loss.
